My deep interest has always been learning about my elders’ past and their journey to America. This exploration not only strengthens my connection with them but also deepens my understanding of the challenges they endured to create the opportunities I enjoy today.
The history of the Hmong people, particularly in relation to the Vietnam War and the Secret War, is often overlooked or entirely absent from history classes. I am passionate about bringing this history to light—sharing the story of my people and ensuring it receives the recognition it deserves.
Paj Nthaub
The Paj Nthaub, also known as the flower cloth, is a traditional story cloth, typically hand-stitched to narrate the history of the Hmong people's migration to America. It served as my primary inspiration for the board design, not only conveying the story but also offering players an immersive experience of that journey.
My parents' sacrifices built the foundation for the life I am blessed to live today.
Beyond preserving history, my goal is to promote cultural diversity, inclusivity, and geographical awareness. Understanding more about one’s community and the diverse stories of those around us fosters a supportive, loving, and empathetic environment.
This is an opportunity for the stories of my people to be shared, experienced, and truly heard.
My Gallery Space
The goal was to design the space to resemble a modern museum while incorporating traditional Hmong elements, such as the Paj Ntaub (flower/story cloth) that inspired the board, traditional clothing, and bamboo baskets. This arrangement highlights the deep cultural roots and artistic inspiration behind the game, blending tradition with modern creativity.
The space features a collective display of the handcrafted board game, surrounded by its assets accompanied by a backdrop inspired by Paj Ntaub (Hmong flower cloth).
Here is a traditional Hmong outfit that includes a xauv (necklace), an apron, and a Hmong hat. These elements display the cultural significance in Hmong attire, reflecting both heritage and identity.
This is a timeline detailing key events of the Vietnam War and the immigration journey of the Hmong people. The line is also the Mekong River, essential in the immigration process.
